The Beacon Inn at Sidney is the first business in the world to advertise in outer space using laser light technology. Our message left Mother Earth on June 5th, 2003 at 10:56:14 p.m. from the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory located at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, B.C.
As a 5-star property used to welcoming foreign travelers, we thought it appropriate to invite visitors from outer space to make this their first stop on Earth. Sidney is a peaceful, small seaside town light years from what they are likely used to, and the friendly locals enjoy helping visitors.
We have beamed our welcoming message at the Spiral Galaxy in Canes Venatici, at only 31 million light years distant. More info

It reads: "When visiting planet Earth stay at the Beacon Inn at Sidney, in peaceful, friendly Sidney-by-the-Sea, British Columbia, Canada. After a long trip our elegant accommodation will make a pleasant change. Stretch out on our Queen feather beds and enjoy our luxurious bathrooms and soaker tubs. You will hardly notice gravity. Explore the area after a full, fresh breakfast. We welcome foreign travelers."
The telescope, located in the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, has attached to it, a customized laser developed by Ganymede Technologies, fSONA Communications Corporation and the National Research Council of Canada. Together, the laser, named STELLA, and telescope worked to transmit our message into the Universe.
